Australia’s private debt market is becoming more mainstream, as the number of loans from private investors and markets, as opposed to banks or public markets, increases. Private debt is a clear funding option for property development, and an asset class for income-focused investors driven by the retreat of the banks from commercial real estate lending and a low investment yield rate environment.
Informed investors are looking for sustainable sources of income, capital stability, risk diversification, and protection from inflation – a broadly defensive investment position which is difficult to find. The hunt is intense and finding capital growth without high volatility is increasingly challenging.
Australian private debt is among the few investment asset classes that can offer both capital preservation and growth, with attractive risk-adjusted returns. On this basis, private debt compares very favourably to other investments.
